Edie Falco, born Edith Falco on July 5, 1963, in New York City, is an American actress. She first gained widespread recognition for her role as Carmela Soprano in the HBO series The Sopranos (1999–2007), a performance that earned her multiple awards and critical acclaim. Before that, she appeared in HBO's prison drama Oz (1997–2000) as Diane Whittlesey, and she later starred as the title character in Showtime's Nurse Jackie (2009–2015). In 2016, she played Sylvia Wittel in the web series Horace and Pete, and in 2017 she portrayed defense attorney Leslie Abramson in Law & Order True Crime. Her film work includes lead roles in Laws of Gravity (1992) and Judy Berlin (1999), and supporting roles in Sunshine State (2002), Freedomland (2006), The Comedian (2016), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). She also earned a Tony Award nomination for her role in the 2011 Broadway revival of The House of Blue Leaves.
Falco's career began in 1987, and she has been active for nearly four decades. Over the years, she has won two Golden Globe awards from eleven nominations and four Emmy awards from fourteen nominations, all for her individual performances.
