Biography
About Dorothy Seastrom
Dorothy Seastrom, born Dorothy Susan Seastrunk on March 17, 1903, in Dallas, Texas, was a straight American actress of Caucasian ethnicity. Her brief career in silent film lasted only three years, yet it left a lasting impression. As a teenager, she won a beauty contest and lived in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles, where she began dancing at the Ambassador Hotel. Her film debut came in the 1923 western 'The Call of the Canyon.' She then became Lloyd Hamilton's leading lady in the short films 'King Cotton' and 'Hooked.' Her taffy colored hair earned her the nickname 'The Candy Kid.' Producer Paul Bern gave her a small part in his film 'A Mannequin of Paris.' She also posed for sculptor Finn Hakon Frolich, who called her 'the most beautiful girl in the world.'
In 1924, she married actor and director Francis Corby, but they kept the marriage a secret from the press. While filming 'We Moderns' in 1925, a broken light nearly disfigured her face. Her big break came with a contract from First National, but a weight clause forced her into a starvation diet. The petite actress contracted tuberculosis in the fall of 1925 and spent six months in a sanitarium. Newspapers falsely reported a nervous breakdown. After recovering, she appeared in the comedy 'It Must Be Love,' her final film. Her health never fully returned, so she moved back to Texas. In 1930, she caught influenza, which turned into pneumonia. She died on January 31, 1930, at age 26. She was buried at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas.
