Biography
About Dorothy Dell
Dorothy Dell was a slim, blue-eyed blonde with a natural 32C bust, standing 5'6" tall. She looked like a classic Hollywood starlet of the early 1930s, with perfect legs and a lovely singing voice. Born Dorothy Dell Goff in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on January 20, 1915, she was named the most beautiful baby in Hattiesburg. Her mother claimed to be a descendant of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President. In 1925, the family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she became best friends with Dorothy Lamour, and the two girls dreamed of being actresses together.
As a teenager, Dorothy started entering beauty pageants. After winning the Miss New Orleans pageant, she was crowned Miss Universe in 1930. She then performed in vaudeville, where Florenz Ziegfeld spotted her and asked her to join the Ziegfeld Follies. In 1931, she was critically injured in a car accident and hospitalized for two months. She fell in love with singer Russ Columbo, but he broke up with her. Despite these setbacks, she made her film debut in the 1932 short Passing the Buck. Paramount Studios signed her in October 1933, and she earned rave reviews for her supporting role in Wharf Angel. Critics predicted she would become a big star.
Dorothy costarred with Shirley Temple in Little Miss Marker and with Lew Cody in Shoot the Works. She had a brief romance with boxer Jack Dempsey. In the spring of 1934, it was announced she would play the lead in Now and Forever. Her career was taking off, and she had found true love with caricaturist Nat Carson, to whom she was engaged. Tragically, on June 8, 1934, returning from a party in Altadena at 1:00 AM, the car she was in hit a telephone pole and flipped over several times. Dorothy was killed instantly at age nineteen. The driver, Dr. Carl Wagner, died hours later. She is buried at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. Her role in Now and Forever went to Carole Lombard. Her life was brief, but her talent left a mark.
