Biography

About Dolores Donlon

Edited by the community

At 36, Dolores Donlon was the oldest Playmate of all time when her issue came out in 1957, a record she held until 2025. But by then she had already packed in a Hollywood contract, several marriages, and a career as one of New York's most sought-after models. In the 1940s, she worked under the name Pat Van Iver, earning $500 a week, and in 1945 she was elected "Queen of the New York Press Photographer's Ball." That same year, her pin-up photo was voted the "picture of the year" by more than 300,000 GIs.

Donlon's early life included time at a French convent school in upstate New York, followed by a successful modeling career that landed her on the cover of Life magazine. She became a contract player at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and by the time she appeared in Playboy she had already been married twice. That appearance was during her second marriage, which lasted from 1949 to 1960. In 1953, her pin-up by Stew Sawyer was named the best cheesecake shot of that year by United Press. In October 1954, she was sued for $120,000 by agent Walter Thornton, who claimed she had broken a contract signed in 1945.

Donlon's later years brought more drama. In 1960, while filming Nude Odyssey (1961) in Tahiti, she suffered minor heat stroke in 120-degree temperatures. She married a third time in 1962, and had a child in 1963; that marriage and a fourth in 1974 all ended in divorce. She once promoted the world's largest and most expensive martini alongside Ruta Lee, a drink made with 120 quarts of gin and 60 quarts of dry vermouth. After marrying violinist Robert de Pasquale, she retired from the big and small screens. She also lived in Colombia for two years in the 1970s. Donlon died on November 30, 2012, at the age of 92.
