About Dina Asher-Smith

Edited by the community

British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith stands as the fastest British woman on record. Born on 4 December 1995 in Orpington, Greater London, England, she has been active in athletics since 2009, when she started around age 13. Asher-Smith made her international debut in 2011 and has since become a defining figure in British sprinting.

Her breakthrough came at the 2019 World Championships, where she became the first British woman to win a World title in a sprint event. She took gold in the 200 metres, silver in the 100 metres, and another silver in the 4x100 metre relay, breaking her own British records in the process. That performance, at age 24, made her the first Briton to win three medals at a single World Championships. She followed with a bronze in the 200 metres at the 2022 World Championships. On the Olympic stage, she has earned relay bronze medals at the 2016 Rio Games and the 2020 Tokyo Games, and a silver at the 2024 Paris Games. Individually, her best Olympic finish was fourth in the 200 metres at the 2024 Games, missing a medal by just two-hundredths of a second.

Earlier in her career, Asher-Smith won the 2013 European Junior 200 metres title and the 2014 World Junior 100 metres title. In July 2015, she became the first British woman to run under 11 seconds for the 100 metres. She also broke Kathy Cook's 31-year-old British 200 metres record when finishing fifth at the 2015 World Championships. A four-time individual European champion, she took the 200 metres title in 2016, the 100/200 double in 2018, silver in the 200 metres in 2022, and reclaimed the 100 metres title in 2024. She added the 2019 Diamond League 100 metres crown. Domestically, she has won nine national titles across the 60, 100, and 200 metres as of 2024. Asher-Smith holds the British records for the 100 and 200 metres, and the British indoor record for the 60 metres. She has also been named in the Powerlist as one of the UK's most influential people of African-Caribbean descent, most recently in the 2021 edition.
