Biography

About Debra Winger

Edited by the community

Debra Winger was born on May 16, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, into an Orthodox Jewish family. She is an American actress of Caucasian ethnicity, with brown hair and blue eyes. At 5'4" and 121 lbs, she has a B-cup bra size. Her career is marked by a handful of memorable roles that earned her three Oscar nominations for Best Actress.

Her breakthrough came with An Officer and a Gentleman in 1982, followed by Terms of Endearment in 1983 and Shadowlands in 1994, each earning her an Oscar nomination. Though she never won, she did receive the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress for Terms of Endearment and the Tokyo International Film Festival Award for Best Actress for A Dangerous Woman in 1993. Other notable films include Urban Cowboy (1980), Legal Eagles (1986), Black Widow (1987), Betrayed (1988), Forget Paris (1995), and Rachel Getting Married (2008). In 2012, she made her Broadway debut in David Mamet's play The Anarchist.

Winger has also shared personal stories that turned out to be less than accurate. She often claimed to have volunteered at an Israeli kibbutz and even trained with the IDF, but in 2008 she admitted that she had only been part of a youth tour group that visited a kibbutz. More significant is her recovery from a serious car crash at age 18. She suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, leaving her partially paralyzed and blind for about ten months. Told she might never recover, she decided that if she did, she would move to California and become an actress. She did recover, and the rest is history.
