Biography
About Darby Lloyd Rains
Darby Lloyd Rains is one of the few performers who could make an S&M scene genuinely funny. Born November 20, 1947, in New York, she was raised in a theatrical family; her father performed on Broadway. That early exposure steered her toward show business, and she first earned money as a nightclub singer.
In the early 1970s, financial pressures pushed her into adult films. She started with uncredited roles, including a stripper scene that was cut from The French Connection (1971), then moved into explicit hardcore through 8mm loops and one-day wonders. Working under several stage names, including Darby Lloyd Raines and Melanie Daniels, she became a fixture of New York's underground scene. Over about a decade she appeared in more than fifty films, collaborating with directors like Gerard Damiano, Radley Metzger, and Roberta Findlay. Her best-known titles include Naked Came the Stranger (1975), Memories Within Miss Aggie (1974), and Every Inch a Lady (1975). Fans remember her comedic S&M in Naked Came the Stranger as both hilarious and hot, and her scenes with Harry Reems, Jamie Gillis, and Georgina Spelvin remain part of Golden Age lore.
Rains was often described as fetching and leggy, with long blonde hair, brown eyes, and a lean, athletic build. She stood 5'5" and weighed 108 lbs, with small, natural breasts and an average body type. Off screen she also worked as a professional dominatrix. She identified as bisexual and performed in straight, lesbian, and group scenarios. She lived with musician Joe Negroni until his death in 1978, an event that deeply affected her and led to her retirement from the industry. She later moved to the West Coast, started a green cleaning company, worked with troubled teens, became a massage therapist, and pursued art, selling her work at county fairs. In 2008 she was inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame as a film pioneer. She now lives privately at age 78, focusing on art and therapy.
