About Daisy Coleman

Edited by the community

Daisy Coleman was an American activist, a former actress and artist, who became a prominent voice for sexual assault survivors. Born Catherine Daisy Coleman on March 30, 1997, in Albany, Missouri, she was raised in a family that would later face intense public scrutiny. At age 14, in January 2012, she alleged she was sexually assaulted while intoxicated in Maryville, Missouri. The case drew national attention when authorities were accused of mishandling it, and Coleman and her family faced community backlash and online harassment. They relocated amid the fallout.

Coleman channeled her experience into advocacy, co-founding SafeBAE (Sexual Assault Free Environment), a nonprofit dedicated to preventing sexual assault in schools and supporting survivors. Her story was featured in the 2016 Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, which highlighted the impacts of assault, cyberbullying, and failures in the justice system for young victims. Standing at an average build with blonde hair and blue eyes, she was Caucasian and American. Active from 2013 to 2020, she worked for seven years, starting her advocacy at around 16.

Tragically, Coleman struggled with depression, PTSD, and the lingering effects of her trauma, attempting suicide multiple times. She died on August 4, 2020, in Denver, Colorado, at age 23. Official sources, including her mother, confirmed her death as suicide. Her mother, Melinda, described her as "brave but tired and scared," noting she never fully recovered. Four months later, Melinda also died by suicide. Coleman's legacy remains in the conversations she sparked about how society treats survivors.
