About Cynthia Nabozny

Edited by the community

American singer and songwriter Cynthia "Cyn" Nabozny was born on May 14, 1993, in Michigan. Her parents' divorce when she was a toddler drove her early love for music. By age 16, she was recording and doubling her own vocals. After failing to get into DePaul University's music program, she graduated with a degree in Management Information Systems.

Cyn's career took off in 2015 when she wrote "Only With You" and performed it for Katy Perry, who signed her to Unsub Records. Her debut single under the label, "Together," came out in July 2017. In 2018, she opened for Perry's Witness: The Tour across Mexico, made her Bonnaroo debut, and toured North America with Years & Years. Her single "Moment of Truth" appeared in the animated film Smallfoot. Her debut EP, Mood Swing, released in September 2019, was a seven-track project co-written and produced by Lars Stalfors and Matias Mora. She described it as a "Parisian park," with songs built around a single thesis statement. A reimagined version, Mood Swing (even moodier), came a year later.

In 2020, her song "Lonely Gun" was on the Birds of Prey soundtrack, and "I Can't Believe" was included in To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. She wrote and recorded "Drinks" and "Uh-Oh" for the film Promising Young Woman. "Drinks" spent two months at U.S. Top 40 Radio, peaking at #22. The Mixed Drinks Collection followed, with a stripped-down rework and remixes from NERVO, Ladyhawke, MNDR, and Uffie. The song grew in popularity and was featured in Inventing Anna and Gossip Girl. In 2021, she covered "Kiss Me" for the Netflix film He's All That. In 2022, she released a version of "Heaven Shine A Light" for the HBO Max film Moonshot, along with singles "House with a View" and "Losing Sleep." Her debut album, Valley Girl, came out in November 2024 via Unsub/Capitol Records.

Cyn counts Jewel, Sheryl Crow, and Rosalía as favorite artists. Growing up near Detroit, she cites Motown as a major influence. Lorde inspired her stage name. She is in a relationship with filmmaker Kyle Newman and has a son born in 2021 and a daughter born in 2023.
