About Christy Chung

Edited by the community

Christy Chung is a Canadian actress of Asian ethnicity, born in Montreal to a Chinese-Vietnamese father and a Vietnamese mother. She grew up speaking French and Vietnamese, later adding English, Mandarin, and Cantonese to her repertoire. Her path to stardom began when she won the Miss Chinese Montreal contest in 1992, leading to her victory in the Miss Chinese International Pageant 1993 despite not knowing a single Chinese word at the time.

That win opened doors in Hong Kong, where she launched her acting career despite limited experience. Her breakout role came in The Bride with White Hair 2, followed by numerous films, including hits with Stephen Chow and The Bodyguard from Beijing starring Jet Li. She has also appeared in Samsara and The Medallion with Jackie Chan. In 2000, Singapore FHM voted her the Sexiest Woman in Asia. She is a brand ambassador for Marie France Bodyline, a slimming service.

Chung has been married twice. Her first husband was Glen Ross, with whom she has a daughter, Yasmine, born during the 1998 Ice Storm. They divorced in 2002. She later married music producer Jon Yen, and they had two daughters, Jaden and Cayla, before divorcing in 2011. She has since retired from acting and now lives in Beijing, where she owns a restaurant. She recently played Bruce Lee's mother in Bruce Lee, My Brother. Despite her fame in Asia, she remains relatively unknown in Quebec, where she grew up, because her film work was largely in Cantonese.
