McKinney initially struggled to find agency representation, so she turned to Instagram as a portfolio. Her social media presence grew rapidly, earning her the label "Insta-famous" and a profile in Esquire. She later signed with Wilhelmina Models and landed campaigns for Guess. In 2015, she appeared in Carl's Jr.'s All Natural Burger commercial, which aired regionally during Super Bowl XLIX. The viral ad used double entendres and implied nudity, leading to comparisons with Kate Upton. That same year, she competed on season 20 of Dancing with the Stars with partner Keoikantse Motsepe, finishing in 11th place.
