About Carly Simon
Musician and author Carly Simon has spent more than six decades in the public eye, starting her professional career in 1964 when she was around 19 years old. Born on Monday, the 25th of June 1945, in The Bronx, New York, she is American and of Mixed-race (primarily Caucasian) ethnicity. Over the years, she has built a remarkable legacy as a singer-songwriter, with 24 Billboard Hot 100 charting singles and 28 Billboard Adult Contemporary charting singles to her name. Her breakthrough came with her 1971 self-titled debut album, which won her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and produced her first Top 10 single, "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." Her follow-up album, "Anticipation," earned another Grammy nomination and later went Gold, while her third album, "No Secrets," reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for five weeks, was certified Platinum, and spawned the worldwide hit "You're So Vain." That song alone brought her three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Simon's career includes numerous hit records, with 13 Top 40 U.S. hits, among them "Anticipation," "Haven't Got Time for the Pain," "You Belong to Me," and "Coming Around Again." Her four Gold-certified singles include "You're So Vain," "Mockingbird" (a duet with James Taylor), "Nobody Does It Better" from the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, and "Jesse." In 1988, she made history with "Let the River Run" from the film Working Girl, becoming the first artist to win a Grammy, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe for a song she composed, wrote, and performed entirely by herself. AllMusic has called her "one of the quintessential singer-songwriters of the '70s." Her vocal range is contralto, and she has cited Odetta as a significant influence.
Beyond music, Simon has authored five children's books and two memoirs. Her list of honors includes induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, a Boston Music Awards Lifetime Achievement in 1995, a Berklee College of Music Honorary Doctor of Music Degree in 1998, a Grammy Hall of Fame induction for "You're So Vain" in 2004, and the ASCAP Founders Award in 2012. She stands 5'10" tall with a slim build, grey eyes, and brown hair. She is 81 years old.
