Biography
About Candida Royalle
Candida Royalle, born Candice Marion Vadala in New York, New York, United States, was a woman of many talents. She attended the Parsons School of New York and the City University of New York, while working office jobs and doing nude modeling for easy money. In the early 1970s, she moved to San Francisco, where she performed with the avant-garde theatre groups the Cockettes and the Angels of Light, and sang in jazz clubs. She later became a Porn Star, performing scenes with leading male stars like John Holmes and John Leslie. She married in 1984 and stopped performing.
In 1984, Royalle founded Femme Productions, a company dedicated to making erotica based on female desire. Her films catered to women and couples, and were praised by therapists for depicting healthy, realistic sexual activity. She avoided what she called "misogynous predictability" and the male-centred focus on the "cum shot," instead showing sex within a broader emotional context. She signed the Post Porn Modernist Manifesto in 1989 and later served as a founding board-member of Feminists for Free Expression. She also executive produced the film Afrodite Superstar, which was nominated for seven AVN Awards in 2007.
Royalle was also a Teacher, Writer, Director, and Producer. She was a member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. In 2012, she was one of 25 women featured in the book 'Golden Goddesses: 25 Legendary Women of Classic Erotic Cinema, 1968-1985' by Jill C. Nelson. She died in 2015 at the age of 64, leaving behind a legacy of pioneering adult films. She was an American with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'3" with a slim build.
