Biography
About Brianna Decker
Brianna Decker is a former ice hockey forward who left an enduring mark on women's hockey. She was born on May 13, 1991, in Dousman, Wisconsin, and grew up as the only girl among four siblings. Decker began playing hockey at age three with her brothers, and she credits that competitive environment for shaping her determination. Her parents instilled a strong work ethic in all their children, and Decker carried that drive from the backyard rink to the international stage.
Decker played collegiately for the Wisconsin Badgers, where she earned the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as the top female collegiate hockey player in the U.S. Internationally, she was a key player for the U.S. Women's National Team, winning a gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang and a silver at the 2014 Sochi Games. She also claimed gold at the 2009 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship. Over her career, she competed in three Olympics, bringing home one gold and two silvers. Her World Championship résumé is equally impressive, with eight medals, including six golds. Decker retired from playing in March 2023.
Her path to retirement was not without adversity. In the opening game of the 2022 Beijing Olympics, she suffered a broken left fibula and torn ankle ligaments, ending her tournament early. Although she considered a comeback, she ultimately decided her heart was ready for a new chapter, saying, "I want to make an impact like coaches did on me throughout my career." She had already served as an assistant coach for three Under-18 Women's National teams, and she transitioned to coaching full time. Off the ice, Decker founded the Brianna Decker Endowment Fund for Girls Hockey, which provides grants to girls' hockey programs to reduce equipment costs and increase youth participation. She also enjoys giving back through youth hockey clinics, mentoring young players. In her free time, she likes listening to music, cooking, biking, and playing cards. She is the daughter of John and Marilyn Decker, and the sister of Bryan, Ben, and Brody.
