Biography
About Bianca Andreescu
With her long black hair, brown eyes, and an average frame at 5'7", Bianca Andreescu carries the steady, focused look of a competitor who has been at the top of her sport. She is Canadian, born in Mississauga, Ontario, and has made history as the highest-ranked Canadian in WTA history, reaching a career-high of No. 4 in the world. Her 2019 season was extraordinary: she won both the US Open and the Canadian Open, defeating Serena Williams in each final. She became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title, and the first player to win a Grand Slam as a teenager since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
Andreescu took up tennis in Romania, her parents' home country, before returning to Canada. As a junior, she won the Orange Bowl and two Grand Slam doubles titles with Carson Branstine, and reached a career-best junior ranking of No. 3. After a quiet 2018, she burst onto the scene in 2019 with a runner-up finish at the Auckland Open, then won Indian Wells, a Premier Mandatory tournament. Despite missing months due to injury, she qualified for the WTA Finals and ended the year ranked No. 5.
Her playing style mixes power with variety, and commentators often call her fun to watch. She has strong support from both Canadian and Romanian fans, a connection rooted in her Romanian heritage. She lived in Romania for two and a half years as a child, speaks fluent Romanian, and visits annually with her parents. She was raised partly by her Romanian grandparents. She has said she didn't have a favorite player growing up, but she modeled her game after Simona Halep, whom she first met at the 2016 Canadian Open; Halep advised her to turn professional. She also looks up to Kim Clijsters and the Williams sisters.
In 2022, she faced a challenging season. After missing the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami due to injury, she returned at Stuttgart, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16. She reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since 2021 in Rome, losing to world No. 1 Iga Świątek. At the French Open and Wimbledon, she reached the second round. She made her first grass-court final at Bad Homburg, losing to Caroline Garcia, and she also reached the third round at the Canadian Open and the US Open. She remains a dedicated player, practicing meditation and yoga since age 12, and credits her mental strength to her family and coaches. She is also known for her dog Coco, a poodle who became a popular presence during her US Open run.
