Biography

About Barbara Mori

Edited by the community

Barbara Mori broke through as the lead in Rubí, the 2004 telenovela that became one of the most successful in history. That role sealed her reputation and earned her a TVyNovelas Award. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, she is Uruguayan by nationality and spent her early years between Uruguay and Mexico before settling in Mexico City at twelve. Her father's side includes Japanese ancestry, and her mother is of Lebanese descent, giving her a mixed-race background that is primarily Latin.

Mori's path to acting started by chance. At fourteen, while working as a waitress, fashion designer Marcos Toledo invited her to model. That launched a career that began in 1992, when she was a fashion model, and soon led to acting. She studied at El Centro de Estudios de Formación Actoral and made her debut in Al norte del corazón, followed by comedy series Tric Tac and the hit Mirada de mujer, for which she won her first TVyNovelas Award as Best New Actress. Her first leading role came in Azul Tequila in 1998, and she went on to appear in Me muero por tí, Amor descarado, and Subete A Mi Moto, among others.

Mori has worked across Mexican, Hollywood, and Bollywood cinema. She starred in La mujer de mi hermano (2005), the Guillermo del Toro produced Insignificant Things (2008), and Kites (2010) opposite Hrithik Roshan. She also appeared in Cantinflas (2014) and Treintona, soltera y fantástica (2016). As a producer, she backed Amor, Dolor y Viceversa and Viento En Contra. She is also a survivor of early stage cancer, which she discussed in the docu-drama 1 a Minute. Now 48, she is a mother and grandmother. Her personal life includes a son with actor Sergio Mayer and a brief marriage to baseball player Kenneth Ray Sigman.
