About Barbara Britton
American actress Barbara Britton was born Barbara Maurine Brantingham on September 26, 1919, in Long Beach, California. She began her career in 1941, when a photo of her at the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade caught a talent scout's attention, leading to a Paramount Pictures contract. That same year she appeared in her first two films, and her first major role came in the John Wayne film Reap the Wild Wind (1942). During the 1940s, she starred in 26 films, including several Westerns opposite Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Gene Autry. She is perhaps best remembered for her two-year run as Pam North on the TV and radio series Mr. and Mrs. North, and for her long stint as the Revlon spokeswoman in the 1950s and 1960s.
Britton's image appeared on over 100 magazine covers in a two-year span, including Ladies Home Journal and McCall's. In 1949, a newspaper reported that her picture had appeared on more national magazine covers than any other motion picture actress. She also appeared in the 1959 pilot for The Dick Van Dyke Show, playing Laura Petrie. In 1944, she suffered from nervous exhaustion and sought help from Dr. Eugene J. Czukor, a physician 22 years her senior. They married in April 1945 and remained together for 34 years. The couple had two children, Ted and Christina, and lived in California, Manhattan, and a farmhouse in Bethel, Connecticut, where they ran an antiques shop. Britton died of pancreatic cancer on January 17, 1980, at her Manhattan apartment, at age 60. She had brown hair, hazel eyes, stood 5'6", and had a slim build.
