About Anouk Vetter

Edited by the community

With her blonde hair and athletic build, Anouk Vetter carries the look of a seasoned competitor before she even steps onto the track. She was born in Amsterdam, North Holland, into a family steeped in athletics. Her father, Ronald Vetter, was a hammer thrower turned national coach, and her mother, Gerda Blokziel, won two national titles as a javelin thrower in the 1980s. It was in the D-girls category, at age 12 or 13, that Anouk first excelled in javelin and entered national rankings.

Her international career began with trials as much as triumphs. At the 2009 European Youth Olympic Festival in Tampere, she qualified for the javelin final but withdrew due to a shoulder injury; the relay team was later disqualified. Two years later, at the European Junior Championships in Tallinn, she again had to stop early because of injury, this time in the heptathlon, and she watched compatriot Dafne Schippers take the title. In 2012, at the junior world championships in Barcelona, she matched her personal best in the high jump but gave up after a fall in the 100 m hurdles. A year later at the European U23 Championships in Tampere, she was second after the first day but could not continue the second day because of a quadriceps tear. That injury led her to change her long jump take-off leg from right to left, a switch that paid off with a 6.06 m jump in 2014. At the Hypomeeting in Götzis that year, she scored a personal best 6316 points, earned her European Championship debut, and finished seventh in Zurich.

The breakthrough came in 2016. She won the European title in Amsterdam, her hometown, with a score of 6626 points, breaking the Dutch record of Dafne Schippers and defeating the silver medalist by 168 points. That victory was emotional, and expectations for the Rio Olympics were modest; she finished tenth, the best Dutch performer. In 2017, she took bronze at the World Championships in London, setting a championship record in the javelin throw with 58.41 m. Her career has been marked by resilience against setbacks, and she remains a prominent figure in Dutch athletics. She has consistently competed in the heptathlon, with personal bests in several events, including a 200 m time of 23.70 and a shot put throw of 15.45 m. With a strong family tradition and her own determination, Anouk Vetter has carved out a place among Europe's elite multi-event athletes.
