Biography
About Anna Sawai
Japanese actress and singer Anna Sawai was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on June 11, 1992. She moved to Japan at a young age and made her acting debut at 11, playing the titular role in a 2004 Tokyo stage production of Annie that was simulcast on Nippon TV. In 2006, she won an audition with Avex Inc. and trained at their music and dance bootcamp. She went on to appear in the drama Our Love Song (2007) and made her film debut as Kiriko in the 2009 martial arts film Ninja Assassin.
Sawai became a household name in Japan as a lead vocalist of the girl group Faky from 2013 to 2018. During that time she also took on solo projects, including starring in Elliott Yamin's music video "Katy" (2015), featuring on Yamato's single "Shining", and voicing Angélique Noir in the video game Style Savvy: Styling Star (2017), for which she also sang the theme song. She left Faky in late 2018 to focus on acting. Her return to screen roles came with the Japanese mystery Colors (2018) and the British crime series Giri/Haji (2019), where she played the daughter of a Yakuza boss.
Hollywood soon followed. Sawai took on the role of Elle in F9 (2021), the ninth Fast & Furious film, and then starred as Naomi in the Apple TV+ drama Pachinko (2022). Both brought her international attention. She currently leads the monster series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) as Cate Randa and is set to appear as Lady Mariko in the FX limited series Shogun. Sawai is bilingual in English and Japanese, and she lives in Tokyo. On Instagram she has gathered 871,000 followers.
