Her career spanned stage and screen, but she is best remembered for her recurring role as Lana Shields, the amorous upstairs neighbor on the sitcom Three's Company.

Ann grew up in Texas, graduating from Highland Park High School in University Park, where she was a classmate and childhood friend of Jayne Mansfield. After earning a degree from the University of Texas in 1957, she moved to New York City. She was admitted to the Actors Studio, which became a cornerstone of her training. Her Broadway debut came in 1958 with Make a Million, and she went on to appear in numerous Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including Period of Adjustment, Blues for Mr. Charlie, The Last Analysis, and Thieves.

In 1978, Ann won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for her work in Chapter Two. On television, she also played Hilda Henley in Sweet Dreams and Merleen Elldridge in Evening Shade. Her portrayal of Lana Shields brought a distinctive energy to Three's Company, and she was known as a character actress who could imbue even minor roles with memorable detail.
