Biography
About Angela Scoular
Angela Scoular had blonde hair and blue eyes, a combination that suited her bright, comedic screen presence. She stood 5 feet 6 inches tall with an average build. Born on 8 November 1945 in London, she grew up in England and went on to train at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before launching her acting career in the early 1960s.
Scoular's film and television work spanned several decades, but she is best remembered for her appearances in two James Bond-related productions. She played Buttercup in the 1967 spy spoof Casino Royale, a non-Eon film starring David Niven and Peter Sellers. Two years later, she took on the role of Ruby Bartlett, one of Blofeld's allergy girls, in the official Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service alongside George Lazenby. That distinction made her one of the few actresses to appear in both the non-Eon and Eon Bond eras. Her other screen credits include A Countess from Hong Kong (1967) directed by Charlie Chaplin, Great Catherine (1968) with Peter O'Toole, and Doctor in Trouble (1970). She also acted in TV productions such as Romeo and Juliet (1965), David Copperfield (1966), Wuthering Heights (1967), and later The Avengers, The Saint, and Blandings (1995). She retired from acting around 1996.
Scoular married veteran actor Leslie Phillips in 1982, and the couple had one son together. Her later years were marked by personal difficulties, including struggles with alcoholism, depression, bowel cancer, and financial problems. She died on 11 April 2011 at age 65 in Maida Vale, London. The coroner ruled her death a suicide after she ingested a corrosive cleaning liquid containing sulphuric acid. Despite these hardships, her Bond appearances and her work in British film and television remain part of her lasting legacy.
