Biography
About Aly Raisman
Aly Raisman is a retired American artistic gymnast who competed at the highest level for more than a decade. She was born on May 25, 1994, in Needham, Massachusetts, and began her elite career around 2009, remaining active until 2020. As captain of both the 2012 "Fierce Five" and the 2016 "Final Five" U.S. Olympic teams, she led her squads to team gold medals at consecutive Games. At the 2012 London Olympics, Raisman captured gold in the team and floor events and bronze on balance beam, making her the most decorated American gymnast at those Games. Four years later in Rio, she added a team gold, plus silvers in the all-around and floor exercise. With six Olympic medals, she is the third-most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history, behind Shannon Miller and Simone Biles.
Her international success extended beyond the Olympics. Raisman was part of gold-winning American teams at the 2011 and 2015 World Championships, and she earned a bronze on floor at the 2011 Worlds. Domestically, she won national titles on floor in 2012 and 2015 and on balance beam in 2012, and she collected five all-around medals at the U.S. Championships. In 2013, she was inducted into both the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Raisman, who is Jewish with roots in Romania and an Ashkenazi heritage from Lithuania, Ukraine, and Russia, also served as a UNICEF Kid Power ambassador in 2016.
Outside competition, Raisman became a prominent advocate for survivors of sexual abuse. In 2017, she came forward publicly as one of many athletes abused by former USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar, with abuse beginning when she was 15. She delivered an impact statement at his sentencing in January 2018, and the following month filed a lawsuit against USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee, asserting they should have known about the abuse. In May 2018, she and other survivors received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. She also appeared in Maroon 5's "Girls Like You" music video that year, wearing a shirt that read "Always Speak Your Truth." Raisman has also modeled for Sports Illustrated at their Swimfest in 2017 and posed for ESPN's Body Issue in 2015. She stands 5'2" with an athletic build and is the oldest of four children.
