Alice Denham
Biography
About Alice Denham
American native of Jacksonville, Florida, Alice Denham lived a life that spanned modeling, academia, and writing. Best remembered as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for July 1956, she was also a published author and a former adjunct professor of English. Her time in front of the camera included posing for several men's magazines, but her intellectual pursuits were just as significant.
Denham graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina in 1949 and earned a master's degree from the University of Rochester the following year. While other Playmates had written text for their pictorials, Denham stood out as the only one to have a short story published in the same issue as her centerfold. Her writing career included short stories, novels such as Amo and My Darling from the Lions, and a memoir titled Sleeping with Bad Boys, released in October 2006. She also taught creative writing at the City College of New York from 1970 to 1980 and held fiction-writing seminars at the University of Toronto. At the time of her death in January 2016, just days before her 89th birthday, she had reportedly completed her memoirs and was working on a non-fiction book about her family's migration from South Carolina and Scotland to Florida during the Seminole Indian Wars. It's a remarkable trajectory for a woman who was also a petite, red-haired centerfold with real, natural 32D measurements.
