About Alice Brady
Alice Brady was an American actress whose career spanned both the silent and sound eras of Hollywood. Born in New York City on November 2, 1892, she was drawn to the stage from childhood, likely influenced by her father, famed Broadway producer William A. Brady. She made her film debut at age 22 in As Ye Sow (1914) and quickly became a sought-after performer. Her early career was prolific; after appearing in three films in 1915, she starred in nine productions the following year.
Brady successfully made the transition from silent films to talkies, a feat many actors of her time could not achieve. In 1936, she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for My Man Godfrey (1936). The following year, she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in In Old Chicago (1938). Her final film was Young Mr. Lincoln (1939). Her legacy endures as one of the few actresses to excel in both silent and sound cinema. She remains a notable figure in early Hollywood history, remembered for her talent and versatility. Her short but impactful career left an indelible mark on the film industry.
