Biography
About Aimee Mann
Aimee Mann is an American singer-songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. She began performing in the early 1980s, first with the Young Snakes and Ministry, then as a co-founder of the new wave band 'Til Tuesday. Their 1985 single "Voices Carry," which she wrote, reached the top ten. The band released three albums before Mann left in 1990 to go solo.
Her solo debut, Whatever, came in 1993, followed by I'm With Stupid in 1995. Both earned good reviews but sold modestly, and she clashed with her label, Geffen. Wide recognition arrived with her songs for the 1999 film Magnolia, including "Save Me," which received Academy Award and Grammy nominations. When Geffen declined to release her third album, she put out Bachelor No. 2 on her own label, SuperEgo Records, in 2000. It was a critical and commercial success, proving she could thrive outside the major label system.
Mann has released seven more solo albums since then, plus a 2014 collaboration with Ted Leo called Both. She also paints and creates comics, and has acted in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Portlandia, and Steven Universe, as well as films like The Big Lebowski. Her awards include two Grammys, one for Best Folk Album for Mental Illness. In 2006, both NPR and Paste named her among the greatest living songwriters.
