Biography

About Ai Iijima

Edited by the community

Ai Iijima, born Matsue Okubo on October 31, 1972, in Kamedo, Koto-ku, Tokyo, Japan, was a Japanese media personality, writer, and former AV Idol. She stood 5'4" and had measurements of 34–22–34, with black hair and brown eyes. She attended Takinogawa Girls' High School but left before graduating, and she later worked as a hostess in Roppongi, where a club owner gave her the stage name "Ai Iijima." In 1992, at age 19, she debuted in the adult video industry, initially presenting a "classic beauty" look with black hair before rebranding herself with a tanned, brown-haired "gal" (gyaru) aesthetic. Her years active spanned 1992 to 1994, a period of just two years. She was straight, had a slim body type, and her measurements gave a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.65. Her performances included solo nudity, masturbation, and boy/girl scenes involving blowjob and vaginal sex. She died on December 17, 2008, at age 36, from pneumonia; her body was found on December 24 in her apartment in Tokyo. She never married.

Ai Iijima's groundbreaking mainstream breakthrough came in 1992 when she became a regular on the late-night variety show Gilgamesh Night on TV Tokyo. Her signature skirt-lifting move earned her the nickname "The Queen of Thongs" and made her a household name. She also released a single and an album in 1993. After retiring from AV work around 1994, she transitioned to a successful TV career, appearing on shows like Tunnels no Minasan no Okage Desu. Her candid, "ditzy" personality won over audiences. In 2000, she published her semi-autobiographical novel, Platonic Sex, which disclosed traumatic experiences including assault, her AV career, STIs, abortion, and plastic surgery. The book sold well and was adapted into a film and a TV drama. She later became an advocate for STI prevention.

Ai Iijima retired from the entertainment industry on March 31, 2007, due to health problems from pyelonephritis, a chronic kidney infection. She continued updating her blog, Ai Iijima's Porn Hospital, until December 5, 2008. After her death, her family kept the blog as a memorial until its official closure on October 31, 2015. Her legacy remains as someone who broke barriers and spoke openly about her life. She was born in Koto-ku, Tokyo, and lived a life that was anything but quiet. Her story continues to be remembered.
